When birds "sit" on branches, tendons in the legs pull their claws into a closed position and lock the birds onto their perch. When awake, the bird "stands," unlocking the tendons to prepare to take off Most backyards with feeders attract cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis). Cardinals forage, court, nest, and feed chicks, all within human viewing distance, as the nests are usually less than ten feet from the ground. Many pairs breed twice a year, and both parents are active in raising the chicks. A male brings gifts of food to his mate, an indication of his "earning capacity."
