Turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) are notorious meat-eaters – particularly dead meat, which they can smell from miles away. They are opportunistic scavengers, but in the process, they remove road kill efficiently. They are protected from diseases that decaying animals carry by a sophisticated immune system. Their digestive tract contains chemicals that destroy bacteria that would be lethal to other animals. The grossest? They let their excrement run down their legs to cleanse their feet from germs accumulated during feeding.
