Are there weekly themes for Explorers & Rangers?
Each week has a general theme, in the morning they are guided by a Teacher Naturalist along with their Camp Counselors and in the afternoons they have Choice Activities so they can choose their own adventure. Campers will spend time learning about the environment, hiking the trails, exploring habitats, and spending time outdoors.

We are now accepting applications for Junior Counselors. CLICK HERE for more information.
-
What is your rain policy?List Item 2
If sprinkles or light rain are expected, wear a raincoat, it is okay to get wet and muddy at outdoor nature camp! If heavy storms are forecast, we reserve the right to hold camp in the Visitor Center or cancel at our discretion. We will post any weather cancellations on our website and notify parents via email by 8:30 a.m.
-
How will I be contacted if there is an emergency?
You will be contacted immediately should there be any emergency involving your child or if your child becomes ill during camp. For this reason, it is important that we have all your emergency contact information at the start of the camp. Notifications include calls, automated text messages to a designated number you choose, and emails.
-
How can I best prepare my camper to spend time outdoors?
It can get very warm in the sun so wear light colors. If your child is sun sensitive, please bring a hat and sunscreen. If a camper wishes to bring insect repellent, he/she will be responsible for applying and carrying it. We recommend applying insect repellant before you get to the Preserve. As most activities are outdoors, we do recommend that you check your child for ticks at the end of each day.
-
What should my camper wear?List Item 3
Hands-on exploration is likely to leave your child a little dirty so please do not wear new or favorite articles of clothing to camp. Old clothes and sneakers are strongly recommended. No sandals, flip flops or open-toed shoes please. Lightweight long pants or shorts that come down to the knees will also provide protection from briars and insects. Small backpacks may be brought to carry personal items. Full day campers should also bring a change of clothes and a towel.
-
Should I send a snack with my camper?List Item 4
Please be sure to send your child with a healthy lunch (full day sessions), snack, and water each day. These should be clearly marked with your child’s name. No refrigerator is available. We encourage campers to “GO GREEN” by packing a lunch that uses reusable containers and water bottles.
-
What should I do if my camper needs to take a medication?
If your child requires medication during the time they are in our care, please notify the Camp Director, Jenn Bilger, prior to the first day of camp. Our staff is not authorized to handle any medications. If needed, a staff member can verbally assist your child with taking his or her medication. Please make sure all medication is labeled with your child’s name.
-
What not to bring.
Please do not send your child in with any electronic devices, live animals, or anything that holds value to them (a special gift, favorite shoes or clothing item etc.), if a camper accidentally brings electronic devices in we will securely store them until the end of the day. This camp helps your child(ren) unplug and experience being outdoors in nature!! Thank you for your cooperation:)
-
Summer Birthday Celebrations?
If your child(ren) have a summer birthday during a day of camp they are attending, let me know if you would like us to sing to them or acknowledge their birthday in a way that is fitting for them (not all children like the attention of being sung to by everyone, so sometimes we get creative and we make a card or give them a special role for the day etc.)
We do not typically do any celebratory refreshments, however, if you wish to provide a special food or beverage treat please contact the Camp Director/Environmental Education Manager so we can plan around any food allergies and give you the accurate number of campers attending that week along with their counselors for the week (FYI: this number could be up to 50+ on a full session).
-
How does the drop-off/pick-up process work?
Because the safety of your child(ren) is of the utmost importance, we have implemented a specific policy for drop-off and pick-up. Each child must be checked in camp staff by a parent or designated authorized adult. Each parent will be asked to sign in his/her child at the beginning of the day and to sign out his/her child at the conclusion of camp.
If you need to have someone that wasn't initally listed as a authroized drop-off/pick-up person, a written note or email must be given to PVNC staff.
-
Do you have a lost and found?
All personal belongings should be marked with the child’s name. You may check with the Camp Director or Visitor Center for any found items that could not be matched with an owner. After the summer camp session has ended, any unclaimed items will be donated to charity.
